Why should you fertilize daylilies?
The main reason for fertilizing daylilies is that it promotes a rich and intense flowering. You should fertilize these plants, as soon as their abundance of flowers decreases or the flowers no longer appear.
Furthermore, it is advisable to fertilize the daylilies to enjoy them for a long time. Many nutrients help the daylilies to defend themselves against diseases and pests, to be able to grow healthy and to drive them out every year after the winter.
When should you apply the fertilizer?
When planting you should enrich the soil with compost. So you do not need to fertilize the daylilies in the same year. From the 2nd year onwards, an annual fertilizer supply is sufficient.
The exception is daylilies in the tub. They should be supplied with fertilizer more often. But beware: After July you should no longer fertilize daylilies! The best time to fertilize is from late April / early May to June. If you fertilize later, it damages the plant. It can be difficult to adjust to the winter by late fertilizer.

Anyone who shies away from the cost of fertilizer can alternatively cover the daylily with a thick layer of bark mulch. This slowly and evenly releases nutrients to the plant and protects them from drying out.
