Straw bales are ideal as beds. Whether in the balcony, on the terrace or in the garden of straw bales provides a perfect background for fruits, vegetables or flowers. The following describes how to plant your straw bale step by step.
Why plant straw bales?
Straw bales are particularly suitable as a base for tomatoes, lettuce and Co., because the fertilization and watering inside a rotting process is set in motion. This creates heat and nutrients, both good conditions for fast, healthy growth and a rich harvest.
When and where can the straw bales be planted?
You should not set up your straw bales until it freezes. Also, you should start with the casting and fertilizing, when no frost is expected.
Place your bales of straw in a sunny spot. Fruits and vegetables should have at least 6 hours of sun to thrive well.
Plant straw bales: A guide
In principle, you can plant all the fruits and vegetables that you grow on a "normal bed" on a straw bale. Due to the slightly higher soil temperature, you can harvest even earlier.
1. Set up straw bales
Firmly tie the straw together and place it with the straw ends up (and down) to the desired location. Alternatively, you can place your bales of straw in bed borders, e.g. from pallets to give them a hold.
Place several bales of straw close together to get a larger bed. Make sure that you reach the center well from all sides, in order to have no problems later on harvesting.
2. Pour straw bales and fertilize
Now the straw bales are watered and fertilized for 10 days. On the first day, the straw bales are thoroughly watered and then fertilized, on the second day is only slightly watered, fertilized on the third day, etc. One day of fertilizer, the next day water until the 10 days are over. Water gently so that the fertilizer is not rinsed out. Cover the bales in the rain. After 10 days, the bales should be warm inside and smell of rotting.
