Normally, pansies do not mind frost and snow
How do you overwinter pansies?
Pansies are native to the temperate Central European climate and therefore hardy. In the mild winters they bloom until the spring. In frost, they roll their flowers and open when it gets warmer again.
Since the beginning of the 19th century, pansies have been selectively bred with large flowers, early flowering time and more winter hardiness. The pansies and horned violets easily tolerate temperatures in the light minus range, harder and longer periods of frost, especially if they are protected by a snow cover.
In very cold winters without snow there is a risk of freezing, in addition, in a sunny spot the risk of dehydration. Therefore it is recommended for the seedlings planted in summer and autumn a cover of straw, leaves or brushwood. In small containers such as window boxes, bowls or pots, the pansies can not be overwintered.
Tips & Tricks
The self-made pansies are more robust and frost-resistant. On the other hand, the greenhouse products offered in spring are often sensitive to cold.
