Pansies - the first spring messengers on the balcony
The colorful pansies from the family of violet plants are particularly suitable for the balcony planting due to their compact growth. They are also robust, easy-care and tirelessly bloom in different colors from April to October.
Although there are pansies in many different species, the garden pansies and horned violets are the most commonly encountered bedding and balcony plants. The garden pansy is a cross between several species, u. a. from wild pansies (Viola tricolor) with the Altai pansies (Viola altaica) and Sudeten pansies (Viola lutea). The horned violet is also called a miniature pansy because its flowers are much smaller.
Pansies as balcony plants
The garden pansies and the horned violets are small-sized (about 20 cm high) plants. While the hornbeams emit a faint scent, the garden pansies do not smell. The flowers of these two viola species are characterized by extraordinary variety of colors. As the first spring messengers, the frost-hard pansies can already be planted in window boxes and pots in February.
Create beautiful combinations with pansies
The pansies are well suited as a colorful underplant for tall tulip and daffodil varieties. Especially white pansies can be wonderfully combined with tulips in strong red / pink or soft pink. A tone-in-tone planting of horn violet, forget-me-not and grape hyacinths in different shades of blue is very striking. The yellow pansies go well with daisies and tailors.
Maintain balcony pansies properly
The frugal pansies usually colonize our balconies only in the spring months. Then they have to make room for the summer flowers. If you have a garden, you can transplant the sprouted pansies there. At the site they provide self-sowing for offspring. With a little more care, the pansies can remain as permanent planting in the window boxes:
Tips & Tricks
The pansies can be sown with little effort themselves. To have flowering pansies in early spring, sow in August / September outdoors or in winter months in a cool room.
