In fact, you can also build fountains without electric pumps - the numerous, partly still functioning wells from the 17th and 18th centuries prove it. However, such facilities - such as in Versailles - not without a huge effort possible, because in order to bring the water meters high to bubbling, it had to first fall from a great height - water flows only when there is a slope - where it finally had to be transported up again. In Versailles, for example, this was done by a water-powered water lift, which carried the masses up to a height of 160 meters. Of course you can not manage such an effort in your own garden, and you can not transfer other physical games to a garden spring fountain.

The alternative is that you can not build a (permanently) functioning fountain without an electric pump. Submersible pumps are ideal for most applications. Tips
A pump can also be operated in other ways without electricity: for example by solar or wind energy. If you can use a stream or other running water for the fountain, try the so-called Aries pump. This was still very widespread until 150 years ago, but is now almost forgotten.
