Is the spindle shrub suitable for a hedge?
The spindle shrub is ideal for planting a hedge. You can also combine it well with other plants. When planting it on the property boundary, keep in mind, however, that the spindle shrub is very poisonous.
This is especially important if in the neighboring garden animals are allowed to walk around freely or play small children. Because already 30 to 40 fruits can be deadly for a human being. In children, a significantly lower dose is dangerous.
How do you plant a hedge?
You may freely choose the shape of your hedge, whether it should be strictly symmetrical or rather looser. If you want to prevent it from getting lost, we recommend a trapezoidal cut with a slope of about 10 - 20 cm. Ideally, the individual plants are at a distance of about 50 cm each.
If you would like to plant a particularly high hedge, then give your rootstock a climbing aid. It gives him more stability. Alternatively, you can have the spindle shrub attached to a fence or wall. For high hedges, generally choose high-grade varieties of the spindle shrub.
How do you cut a hedge?
The hedge trimming is regulated by law in Germany, which serves, for example, the protection of birds nesting therein. From March to September, you can only perform gentle nursing care if you do not want to risk high penalties. Federal states and municipalities may issue further regulations. If you plan to take bigger action, then check with your local community for the rules that apply.
Although the shape of a hedge is very important, but also here you should first cut off the sick branches and twigs to prevent diseases. Scrub two branches together, then remove one of them. Then it goes to the shape cut.
To be able to cut the height evenly, stretch a string that is clearly visible at the desired height. When freehand cutting a straight line, most people misjudge. So that the hedge does not look crooked, it often has to be cut again.
