When is the best time to repot sundew?
Sundew regularly needs fresh substrate, as the peat contained in it decomposes over time. The carnivorous plant then thrives for many years. When do you best replicate Drosera and what should you look for?
The best time to repot sundew
Sundew should always be repotted in early spring. Then the plant recovers the fastest.
If the plants are repotted every two years at the latest, they will delight you for many years with their flowers and their unusual appearance.
Prepare pots
Many Drosera species remain rather small, so the new pots do not necessarily have to be much larger than the old ones.
Make sure that the planters are deep enough. Some species develop quite long taproots.
Fill pots with carnivorous soil or make a substrate of white peat and quartz sand yourself. Press the earth firmly.
In the center, pierce a depression in which the root of the sundew has sufficient space.
How to plant Drosera properly
Carefully pull the sundew out of the old pot. Make sure that you do not damage the tap root. Shake off the old substrate as completely as possible.
Cut off all dried root parts. If you want to propagate your sundew, you can also cut a few root cuttings.
Insert the Drosera into the new soil and press the substrate firmly. Fill the pot with more substrate.
After repotting, water Drosera well
Put the potted sundew in a water bath to allow the substrate to soak in moisture. Most of the time, you have to top up with water several times.
Only use rainwater for watering and later for watering. If none exist, use distilled water.
Tips
Sundew, which you bought at the hardware store, you should repot as soon as possible. Most plants are in a pot so that the sundew is bushy. Use a separate pot for each Drosera, thus saving the plant the stress of frequent transplanting.
