Sundew is available in many different ways

Anyone who has once dealt with the exciting hobby of breeding carnivorous plants, can not ignore the sundew (Drosera). Sundew is available in countless species, some of which are suitable for beginners. Particularly noteworthy here are Drosera capensis (Cape sundew) and D. aliciae.

Differences between sundew species

So far, over 200 different varieties of Drosera are known, which occur all over the world. All species have in common that they form long tentacles, which are covered with drops of a sticky secretion. Insects stick to this "glue", the tentacles curl up and are digested by the leaves of the plant.

If you are looking to care for more demanding sundew species, you will need plenty of time, space and one or more terrariums.

Most of these varieties, such as the Queensland Drosera and the tropical and subtropical species of their species, need a lot of light, high humidity and special wintering. The ideal environmental conditions can only be established in the terrarium.

For normal housing, these species are not suitable because the risk of mold growth is not to be underestimated.

Tips

There are some types of sundew, which are only very suitable for keeping in the room. These include: tuber-sundew and species from South Africa that have storage roots. These varieties place demands on location and care, which can only be fulfilled by experts.
