The summer lilac is a pronounced butterfly magnet thanks to its long, intensely fragrant flower spikes. The up to 30 centimeters long panicles show up between July and September / October, they provide intensive splashes of color in the garden, when many other summer shrubs have long since withered. Summer lilac is available as a perennial and as a special high-stem commercially.
Uses for high stem summer lilac
A Hochstamm is a summer lilac that has been pulled tree-shaped with a round crown on a single main shoot. This form has the advantage that, in contrast to the natural shrub form, it saves a lot of space - so the high stems find a place even where a spreading, up to two or three meters wide shrub would never fit. Thus, the high-stemmed summer lilac is also suitable for small gardens and a Kübelhaltung.

Plant and care for summer lilac high stem
Regarding the care a summer lilac high stem does not differ from the usual shrub form, only with the pruning there are some important notes to consider.
Location
Like all summer lilacs, the tree trunk thrives best in a sunny, sheltered and warm location. The soil should be rather dry and well drained, the pH should be slightly acidic to slightly calcareous. For a container plant, it is best to use a mixture of a good potting soil and gravel.
Fertilize
Out-planted logs are supplied with compost and horn shavings twice a year, at the end of March and in June. Bucket specimens are fertilized between March and September every two weeks with a liquid flowering plant fertilizer. Make sure it contains less nitrogen and more phosphorus - this will make for a more lush flowering.
To cut
A Buddleja davidii Hochstamm always blooms on this year's shoots and should therefore be cut in early spring. Here is a radical shortening as usual in summer lilac usually makes little sense, otherwise you destroy the beautiful crown. Shorten the shoots so that the round crown shape is preserved. Over-aged branches, on the other hand, are cut off directly at the trunk so that new shoots can grow out. Away from the trunk as well as from the roots awake shoots are removed immediately - otherwise you will soon instead of the high trunk a classic shrub.
Tips
You must also pay attention to a special feature when wintering the shrub: In contrast to the shrub, you must also protect the trunk and the crown shoots from frost in the case of the high trunk, as these may otherwise freeze you.
