Build a wheelbarrow yourself: a guide
A simple wheelbarrow usually costs between 35 and 70 €. The costs of self-construction are around 20 € to 30 €. That alone speaks in favor of building a wheelbarrow yourself. Anyone who still enjoys crafting challenges has found the perfect project. In our construction manual, we explain step by step how to build a wheelbarrow yourself.
Where can I get the bike?
A wheelbarrow consists of three elements: the wheel, the axle that connects the wheel to the wheelbarrow box, and the box. Both box and axle can be easily screwed together from wood, the wheel is a bit more complicated.
Therefore, it is advisable to buy the bike in stores or online. The prices are depending on the size between 13 and 25 €. Alternatively, you can also use a wheel as round as possible. For this to work well, you should provide them with a metal ring, which, however, requires the necessary tools and a lot of knowledge.
Build a wheelbarrow yourself step by step
1. Make the axis
First, make an almost triangular axis at the narrowest angle you attach the wheel. The wheel should best run on a metal bar that you bolt to the axle on both sides. Screw several crossbars to the axle to which you will later attach the box.
2. Make the box
Now build the box in the desired size and screw it onto the transverse slats of the axle.
3. Handles
The handles can already be planned during the construction of the axle and, as it were, attached as an extension of the same upwards (as with a "real" wheelbarrow) or you can attach it to the box.
4. Lay out the foil
You want to transport fine sand or similar with your wheelbarrow? Then you should make sure that this can not slip through the cracks. Lay out your wheelbarrow completely with pond liner, let it flap over the edge and staple it to the sides.
Alternatively, you can simply paint your wheelbarrow with an environmentally friendly exterior and interior paint to protect the wood from dirt and the weather. Even if you lay your wheelbarrow with pond liner, it is advisable to paint it from the outside.
