Unlike real lavender - which, after all, comes from the rougher mountainous regions of the Mediterranean - this type of lavender is not hardy. In the short term, the Schopflavendel may survive temperatures just below freezing, but lasting frosts and especially strong wind with rainfall he does not cope. Therefore, the plant should best overwinter under cold-weather conditions, ie. H. cool and bright, but frost-free and protected from adverse weather conditions.
Special feature: lime-free soil
Actually, the lavender loves alkaline, d. H. calcareous, soil and should be fertilized from time to time with some lime. However, this advice is not applicable to the Schopflavendel - lime is deadly for this. Therefore, you prefer a neutral, if not slightly acidic, pH for this wild beauty. Even with tap water is not recommended, because this contains more or less lime. Use better rainwater or use stale tap water if necessary (leave for at least a week and do not use the last remaining water from the tank for watering!).
Schopflavendel sows itself
Feels the Schopflavendel well, it sows after a few years even by itself. All you have to do is leave the withered stems on the plant - so do not cut them off in the summer - and wait for spring. However, if you need to overwinter the plant indoors, you can also cut off the flower stems and simply leave it outside in the garden.
Tips & Tricks
Do not be surprised if your newly planted baby lavender does not bloom yet - young plants are often quite lazy and do not get going until late. See if the lavender has everything it needs, and otherwise be patient.
