When is the best time to cut currants?
Currants need to be cut regularly. The older the shoots get, the less fruits they develop. The best time for pruning is right after the harvest. Which shoots are removed depends on the variety.
Cut redcurrants twice a year
Cut red and white redcurrants
The shrubs bear berries, especially on the two- and three-year-old shoots. After harvest, all branches older than three years are cut.
Cut blackcurrants
Most blackcurrants grow on the annual shoot branches. By shortening the main drives new branches form.
Care cut in the fall
Remove all sick and dry shoots and clear the currants if necessary.
Tips & Tricks
When pruning redcurrants, do not leave stubs, but cut the branches as close to the base as possible.
