Sow chives directly outdoors
The vitamin-rich chives is known by many names: The botanists call it Allium schoenoprasum, popularly names like Jakobszwiebel, Grusenich or rushes are common. The plant is one of the most popular culinary herbs and in France even the so-called "fines herbes". Most chives are propagated by division, but you can also pull your own plants from the seeds.
Cultivation by sowing not with each variety
However, this type of cultivation is quite tricky. This is partly due to the fact that not every variety of chives can be grown from seeds - some chives can only be propagated by division - and on the other hand, that an increase by seeds due to possible mutations is generally not that easy. In addition, chives are a cold germ, d. H. it needs temperatures below 18 ° C to be germinated at all. For this reason, you can bring the chive seeds from about mid-March to mid-April directly into the open, a preference on the windowsill is not necessary.
The seeds usually germinate within about 14 days. On the other hand, if you want to grow chives in the pot, sow a few seeds in a suitable planter and place them on the balcony. In the room, the chives are often too warm. Use seed or herbal soil for the seedlings.
