Repotting Cymbidium - What to Remember!
Cymbidium grows relatively quickly and can be quite large. The plant pot soon becomes too small, so you have to repot the orchid more often. What do you need to consider when repotting a Cymbidium?
The best time to repot Cymbidium
At the latest, when the roots of the Cymbidium grow out of the top of the pot, it's time for a bigger pot. Repotting is always done right after flowering.
Select the right pot
Like most orchids, Cymbidium likes a tight pot. The new pot should only be slightly larger than the previous one and have sufficient depth for the roots.
A big draw hole is necessary. You should also create in the bottom of the pot drainage of gravel, so that no waterlogging can develop.
For larger pots, make sure they are sufficiently stable as they will easily tip over.
Mix or buy soil yourself
Suitable substrate is orchid soil, which you can loosen even further with bark mulch. The earth can also be mixed well.
For this you need peat, bark mulch and possibly a few polystyrene balls.
The substrate is also a mixture of compost, sphagnum and coconut fibers.
Tips to repot
Examine the roots of the Cymbidium for rotten and soft spots. Such root parts cut off and dispose of them.
Do not fertilize after repotting
Cymbidium orchids need a little more nutrients than other orchid species and are therefore more often supplied with orchid fertilizer.
After repotting, you must not fertilize the orchid for several months to prevent an over-supply of nutrients.
Do not replant potted orchids during the growing season, which lasts from spring to summer. In this time, the leaves grow and also the flowering shoots, which form in winter, are already visible. Forty-four days of fertilization are quite sufficient during the growing season.
Tips
If you need to repot the Cymbidium, you can split them right away to breed offspring. For this, separate roots from the mother plant Bulben and place them in prepared pots.
