Differentiate snowdrops and lilies of the valley
At their peak, both the snowdrop and the lily-of-the-valley show off their best side. But who has not dealt with them, it might be difficult to distinguish them from each other.
Differences of leaves and flowers
The snowdrop has narrower leaves. They are medium to dark green, smooth-edged and pointed. They are springing up in the spring between January and February. The leaves of the lily of the valley appear only in April. They are broad-lanceolate, tapered towards the top and remind of the leaves of wild garlic.
Who compares the flowers of both plants together, will recognize many differences. The snowdrop has only one flower. This is drop-shaped, white on the outside and greenish inside. The lily-of-the-valley has 5 to 13 flowers that are gathered together in a long-stemmed grape. The bell-shaped and pure white flowers appear between May and June, whereas the flowers of the snowdrop appear between January and March.
Differences of fruits
The fruits of snowdrops and lilies of the valley also differ greatly. The snowdrop develops a capsule fruit between March and April after flowering. This is inconspicuous, brownish colored and contains many seeds in its interior. The fruits of the lily of the valley are bright red, spherical and berry-like. They usually mature in August.
