The ornamental lily, also known as Agapanthus after its Latin name, comes from South Africa and has been cultivated in Central Europe for several centuries. The usually very robust plant produces magnificent flowers in midsummer and can be relatively easily multiplied.

In Central Europe, the ornamental lily can usually be grown only as a potted plant due to its frost sensitivity. In extremely mild conditions, some leaf-feeding species of the lily may also be hardy if the temperatures do not fall below minus 15 degrees Celsius and the soil is loose and dry.
