Cowslip flowers in the spring
The true cowslip (Primula veris), popularly known as the spring cowslip, sky key or meadow primrose, is one of the first messengers of spring with its showy, bright yellow flowers.
Cowslip is one of the early flowering plants
The perennial native to almost all of Central Europe and Middle East welcomes in northern and central Germany from about mid to late March the spring and shows its rich yellow flowers into May. However, in southern parts of the world, especially in Austria and Slovenia, this pretty spring flower can often be found from as early as February.
Flowering times of other cowslip species
The wild form of the also known as forest cowslip High cowslip (Primula elatior) usually blooms from March, when the up to 15 centimeters high stems appear funnel-shaped, pale yellow flowers. The also native Stängellose cowslip (Primula vulgaris) is a rosette-forming perennial. The leaf rosette of this plant overwinters, then early - in good weather, often in February - to start the flowering. In heat or dryness, the perennial pulls its leaves for up to six months, to go through with new strength in autumn.
Tips
Cowslips tend to bastardize - even with other, closely related primates. So if you want to avoid hybridization, you should set a safe distance between the species or remove the fruit stalks in good time.
