Verticillium wilting - Tips for diagnosis and control
Fungus spores of the genus Verticillium enter the slot maple via the soil and clog the pathways. Visible symptoms of an infection are in places withered leaves and dry branches. From the base, the disease spreads to the top, so that an Acer palmatum eventually dies. If you cut through affected branches, dark brown ring-shaped discolorations can be recognized. Effective fungicides are not available yet. How to fight Verticillium disease:
At the new location, prepare a spacious plant pit with a sole of sand or fine gravel drainage at the bottom. One third of the excavation is mixed with rhododendron earth. The more permeable and airy the soil, the better the chances are that the sick slit maple will regenerate on its own.
