What helps mildew on a magnolia?
Leaves coated with a whitish coating, some of which also fall off or can curl up, are a clear indication of infestation with mildew. While downy mildew occurs especially in humid weather, the real thing is a fair-weather mushroom.
Prevent mildew
Mildew is a fungal disease that attacks mainly stressed plants. Make sure your magnolia always gets enough light and air, keep the soil wet in dry periods - but not wet - and mulch the root area. In this way you can prevent the disease that eats the affected leaves and shoots from the outside. Powdery mildew causes more serious damage than the wrong one, as it can penetrate the leaves and eventually kill the plant.
Treatment of mildew
In order to inhibit the spread of mildew, you should immediately remove affected leaves and shoots. Some organic and easy-to-produce sprays such as nettle and garlic may increase the plant's resistance to mildew. As a non-organic method, you can also spray with a chemical fungicide, which can also be done preventatively in the spring - even before the leaf shoot.
Tips & Tricks
Milk can also help against mildew, because the bacteria of lactic acid inhibit the development and spread of the fungus. To do this, mix 1:10 milk and water and spray on the plant for about 10 to 14 days.
