If you want to use the opium poppy seed for baking, it is best to buy it in its entirety. The granules contain a great deal of linoleic acid, which is difficult to maintain in ground seeds and then quickly becomes rancid. If necessary, you can finely grind the seeds in a coffee or grain mill.


Buy and grow opium poppy

The seeds of the opium poppy can be purchased under the name blue or baking poppy in the supermarket, but also in organic shops, pharmacies, health food stores or on the Internet quite legal. In theory, these seeds are - unless they are milled - even for sowing. However, this should make you stay better, because the cultivation of opium poppy falls under the Narcotics Act in Germany and is therefore strictly prohibited. So you can buy and use the seeds, but not cultivate the plant - in the event of an infringement you may face imprisonment of up to five years or heavy fines. In exceptional cases, however, poppy cultivation can be applied for and permitted at the Federal Opium Office.

Tips

If you only want to plant poppies in the garden as an ornamental plant, you can use legal species such as the Turkish poppy, the golden poppy or the poppy. However, their seeds are not suitable for consumption.
