Cutting blight cypresses - That's how it's done!
False cypresses are evergreen, resistant to disease and fast growing. They are therefore very popular with horticulturists as hedge or single plants. When keeping as a hedge you have to cut phylloscienes regularly, otherwise they do not fulfill their function as a privacy screen long.

If you have plenty of room in the garden, you can just let the cypress grow. In a sunny spot without many neighbors, the conifers do not shorten down so fast because they get enough light.
It is different if you want to pull blight cypresses as hedge or bonsai. Then you do not come around to regular cutbacks.
If you do not cut back once or twice a year on dense or shady false cypress trees, they shoot you up. The lower part does not get enough light, turns brown and is no longer opaque.
The best time to cut blight cypresses
You can theoretically cut cypress trees all year round, even in winter, when it's not freezing.
With two pruning usually the first in spring and the second in early autumn.
It is up to you how to cut the false cypress into shape. Pillar shapes have proved particularly useful in hedge planting. But even as a bonsai, you can cultivate the cut-willing conifers.
Never cut into old wood
Be sure to avoid cutting into old wood. At damaged places the conifers do not drive again.
Always leave a small piece of the shoot with a few needles on it.
Do not throw cutting waste on the compost
False cypresses contain essential oils that prevent rotting in the compost heap. Dispose of the pruning over the household waste.
Another possibility is to chop the remains and distribute them as a mulch cover under the false cypress trees.
But beware: Do not leave any leftovers of the poison cypress in the garden when children and pets are in it.
Tips
Many savvy gardeners do not cut bill cypress trees in the spring, but only after the St. John's Day. This is the 24th of June. After this time, the false cypress no longer grows so strong and stays in shape longer.
