Horsetail is hardy, but needs protection from the sun
Horsetail belongs to the primeval inhabitants, who have developed over the millions of years to robust, hardly by environmental influences to harmful plants. They are absolutely hardy in nature. Care in the garden does not require winter protection. Horsetail in the pot must be overwintered frost-free.
Horsetail is hardy
The roots of the horsetail, actually rhizomes, are very deep in the ground. Up to two meters, they reach into the ground. Frost does not bother the robust plant at all.
Winter protection is not necessary. Only against too strong winter sun you should protect horsetail.
However, some gardeners recommend covering horsetail at the pond with very heavy frosts with leaves. In most cases, horsetail also survives very frosty winters even without winter protection.

The situation is different when you pull horsetail in a pot or bucket. Here the soil freezes very quickly and the plant comes in, when the winter was very cold.
Winterize horsetail frost-free by:
Make sure that the horsetail does not dry out completely in winter. If necessary, pour some water into the tub on frost-free days.

Pond horsetail and winter horsetail are two species of horsetail that are grown in or around the pond. They are absolutely hardy and do not need winter protection.
The decorative plants tolerate no sunlight in winter. Protect them therefore by putting brushwood or fir branches over the plant as shading.
Make sure that the branches are removed in the spring, because the falling plant remains too much increase the nutrient content of the pond water.
Tips
Horsetail is an evergreen plant that sets colorful accents on the garden pond, especially in winter. Do not cut horsetail in autumn, wait until spring. Then you can cut back the horsetail or reduce the plant altogether.
