Does a sandbox need a substructure?
A substructure in the sandpit is not absolutely necessary, but it certainly has some advantages. The construction depends mainly on the location. A sandpit on the balcony differs significantly from one on the meadow.
What use does a substructure have?
A well designed and carefully designed substructure makes your sandbox easy to maintain and long lasting, as well as contributing to hygiene. Sand and earth can no longer mix, so you avoid a germ load. Water flows better than in a compacted subsoil. This is not so mild forms mold.
The growth of weeds in the sandbox is prevented or at least mitigated by a substructure. Although most herbs are non-toxic, they do not belong in a sandbox because they could attract stinging insects.
How do I attach a substructure?
First you cut off the size and shape of the desired sandbox, then you can dig out the earth in this area. A depth of about 15 cm is recommended. The surface does not necessarily have to be completely flat.
Now fill gravel in the hole. Any bumps compensate them. The gravel ensures that water can drain away later. This will dry the sand quickly after a rain. Nevertheless, you should always cover the sandbox when not in use. Not only does this prevent rain and / or leaves from falling in, it also prevents the sandbox from functioning as a litter box.
So that sand and gravel do not mix, you can tack on the bottom of your sandbox a special foil. This leaves moisture through, but not the sand. It also prevents ants or similar animals from entering the sandbox. The weeds are also much more difficult to grow through.
If you have put the sandbox on the gravel bed, then fill in the desired amount of sand. As a rule of thumb, the sandbox should be filled to just over half.
