The many different types of column cactus
The cereus or Cereus is probably one of the most commonly grown cactus species. The not very easy-care cactus is represented in numerous species. They differ not only in shape and color, but also in blooms and flowering times. Not all can be cultivated in the house.

The home of the pillar cactus is South America. There it grows in predominantly rocky terrain. It stores water in its trunks and tolerates dry phases well. Winter hardy is not one of the many types of column cactus. You therefore always have to overwinter them in the house.
Determine column cactus
There are many very different looking species of Cereus. Unlike leaf cacti, however, they have some common features.
Column cacti always grow upright with only one or more trunks. Some species are hairy, others are armed with thick, strong thorns.
The flower forms range from drooping long white-red flowers to red, upright flowers.
The cereus cactus rarely flowers in room culture
For a cereus to bloom, it must be several years old. If it is kept exclusively in room culture, it almost never blooms. Only when it is granted a rest in winter, occasionally flowers form.
In most of the species of cactus kept here, the flowers only open at night and close again in the morning.

Tips
Not all pillar cacti have long spines. In some species, however, these are very pronounced, while others carry very soft, small spines. Therefore, be careful, especially if children and pets belong to the family.
