Correctly plant the pillar apple - you should pay attention to this
Anyone who has little space in the garden or even just a balcony does not need to forego self-harvested fruit: an apple tree is almost everywhere due to its extremely narrow habit. But beware: not everything that is sold under the name "pillar apple" is actually one. Real column trees grow naturally narrow and do not develop a crown, they also form their fruit directly on the trunk. So that you can harvest as many apples as possible, pay attention to optimal conditions already during the planting.
Which location does the column apple prefer?
Like all fruit trees, columnar apples need a sunny to a half shady location. If it is too dark, the flowering and thus the formation of the fruits can be omitted.
Which soil / substrate is optimal for the column apple?
In the field, a loose, nutritious and slightly acidic to neutral soil is perfect. Highly clayey and compacted soils should be improved and loosened up. For potted plants we recommend a loose, nutrient-rich substrate, which you can mix clay globules or expanded clay.
When is the best time to plant?
Plant the column apple tree best in early spring.
How is a column apple properly planted?
Dig a sufficiently deep and wide planting hole that should be about twice the root ball of the plant. Mix the excavation with plenty of compost and a good handful of horn shavings. Support the freshly planted tree with a support pole, which you use at the same time with the tree - do not hit later, this damages the roots! Finally, it is watered vigorously. A planting is usually not necessary.
Which planting distance should be kept?
If several column apple trees are to be planted as privacy screens, then a distance of about 60 to 80 centimeters is ideal. Otherwise, the ideal distance depends on how strong the neighboring plant spreads - the apple tree itself remains narrow and crownless.
When does the column apple flower?
Like all apple trees, colza apples bloom in spring, usually between April and May.
When can I harvest fresh apples?
When you can reap the first fruits, depends on the specific variety: Again, early, mid-early and late varieties are distinguished from each other. As a rule, the harvest time is between August and September.
Can you multiply the pillar apple yourself?
As with all cultivated fruit varieties, a pure variety reproduction is possible exclusively via vegetative propagation forms or via refinement. In the case of column apples, the latter is done via top finishing, with the "crown" of the columnar apple being finished on an underlaid apple seedling.Choose a low-growing variety, otherwise the tree will quickly grow over your head.
