Cutting redcurrants - you have to pay attention!
Redcurrants must be cut back after harvesting. By removing old shoots, you can ensure that you can reap many redcurrants in the next few years. With the care cut in autumn you keep the currant in shape.
Cut redcurrants
Redcurrants cut twice a year. The first pruning takes place immediately after the harvest in July.
In the autumn you cultivate the shrubs by cutting out old and sick shoots. This is also the best time to cut currant bushes if they are too high.
Pruning in the summer
Red currants bear the most beautiful and sweetest fruit on the two- and three-year-old shoots. When editing, you must be careful not to remove too many one- and two-year branches. If you cut them, you can expect the harvest to be much lower next year.
All main shoots older than three years are cut. They would hardly bear any berries in the next few years. The shoots are separated from the main stem directly at the base. Do not leave stubs standing.
The pruning creates space for wakeful shoots. You should not leave more than ten to a maximum of twelve main shoots on the bush. If the shoots are too dense, the berries remain smaller and less sweet.

By shortening the shoot tips you promote the branching of the small side shoots. Cut a maximum of one third of the shoot directly over one eye.
Pernicious shoots in the bush interior can be removed without hesitation. The berries that grow there are hardly mature in time. They do not get enough sun.
Currants often form unwanted side shoots in addition to the main trunk, the so-called Wasserschosser. These should be removed regularly. There is no fruit growing on them. They only deprive the plant of important nutrients.
Tips & Tricks
White currants are cut just like the red shrubs. Blackcurrants, on the other hand, have the most berries on annual wood. That's why you have to cut back these bushes differently.
