Currants that are pulled as a high stem have some advantages. The berries can be easily harvested while standing. The shrub does not take up so much space - and decorative is a Hochstamm always. To keep it in shape you need to cut it regularly. How to do it!

Why do redcurrants have to be cut as a high stem?

There are several reasons why you must regularly cut high-stemmed redcurrants:

Red currants bear their fruit on the two- and three-year old wood. Older branches are therefore superfluous. They fall victim to a pruning of the scissors.

By pruning, encourage the currant to form more shoots. The crown of the Hochstamms acts thereby more compact.

The best time to cut high-stemmed redcurrants

It is best to cut redcurrants in early spring before the shrub leaves.


Some gardeners recommend cutting redcurrants immediately after harvest. This is not advisable for high stems, because you want to keep the shrub in shape.

How is the red currant bush cut?

Remove the old wood at the base and leave only young shoots. More than eight to twelve strong young shoots should not sit on the high trunk.

How long the shoots have to be depends on the variety. If you do not know which strain of high stems you prefer, ask for advice from an accomplished gardener.

In addition to the old wood cut off all shoots that run through the crown or point down. Finally, cut down all branches that disturb the overall picture of the blackcurrant tree trunk. You can do this work again in the fall.

Runners often grow out of the tree trunk. These cut off immediately. Only then can the Hochstamm keep its shape.

Tips

In addition to the high-stemmed currant sprout occasionally shoots from the ground, so-called Wasserschosser. These should always be cut off immediately. From them only weak shrubs develop, which bear little fruit.
