Rose petal wasp - damage image, prevention, control
The larvae of the rose-leaf wasp (Caliora aethiops) feed on the leaf top and cause unsightly damage. These dry out after a while and leave holes. Diseased leaves should be removed and disposed of with household waste, never over the compost. There, the larvae develop further, so that an infestation is carried next year.
Biology and damage
The greenish, about ten millimeters long larvae - the actual pests on the rose petal - can be easily seen with the naked eye, unlike the adult, only about five millimeters long, black animals. These fly from April, in the corresponding weather even earlier, and lay their eggs on the top and bottom of the roses. From May and June, you will finally notice an infestation at the scraping points, especially at the leaf margins and tops. There are real holes in the leaf, the rose in a heavy infestation reduces their growth or even stops. The larvae dig themselves into the soil around the rose in autumn and pupate there over the cold season, only to haunt the rose again next spring as adult animals.
To combat rose-leaf wasp in a natural way
The rose-leaf wasp can be controlled very well in a natural way, whereby in particular the following measures have proven to be effective:
Create oak manure
Collect about one kilogram of oak leaves and pieces of bark to age for 14 days in water (at best, collected rainwater). The manure should be covered and stirred daily. After 14 days, dilute the brew with water at a ratio of 1:10 and treat your affected roses with it.
Use pesticides only in case of very strong infestation
Not only do pesticides kill rose-rose wasps and other pests, but they also kill off beneficial insects. However, these are important to prevent further infestation. Therefore, you should avoid using environmentally harmful substances, as this parasite can be easily combated with home remedies with a little effort.
Tips
When the rose petals curl, there is probably an infestation with the rose petal wasps behind it.
