Many of the white-flowering panicle hydrangeas show a discoloration to more or less intense reddish when blooming. The inflorescences look very attractive not only in the fresh, but also in the long-withered state, in addition they can be dried easily. Dry flowers - that's how it's done
For the drying of hydrangea flowers, there are several methods, both fresh as well as already (slightly) withered panicles can be used.
Dry fresh flowers
For this method, it is best to choose firm and ripe flower spikes, which you put to dry in a vase filled with only a small amount of water. If you stop filling the water, it will gradually be used up and the flowers will start to dry. They are ready to dry as soon as they feel slightly parchment-like and look slightly wrinkled. Note, however, that the flower panicles lose a lot of color and fade with this method.
As simple as it is effective: dry flowers with cat litter
Drying flowers in cat litter is a real insider tip. Choose a brand that is very fine and preferably does not clump. These fill together with the flower spikes in an airtight sealable container so that the flowers are completely surrounded by the cat litter. After four days you finally pour out the container, the flower is now completely preserved.
Dry slightly faded flowers
Already slightly withered flowers, on the other hand, are best dried hanging upside down in the air. Remove all leaves, leaving only the flower spike and stems. The leafless flower stems are now suspended individually and hanging overhead in a shady and airy place to dry.
Different ideas for autumnal dry arrangements
Dried hydrangea flowers can be wonderfully combined with other dry flowers (eg roses), autumnal fruits (long-lasting fruit such as apples), dried leaves and grass and cereal stalks. You can arrange the hydrangeas either to loose dry bouquets or in arrangements or wreaths. Dried hydrangea flowers with gilded small cones or alder fruits harmonize for a Christmas-like arrangement.
Tips & Tricks
If you want to make panicle hydrangeas cut as cut flowers, then you should put the stems in plenty of water with cut flower food. Even vase hydrangeas can be dried after the flowering of the bouquet.
