Rhododendron Earth is not the same as Rhododendron Earth
Mix or buy rhododendron earth yourself? Why it should be neither the cheapest nor the most expensive product. In general, the pH value must not be below or exceeded. Only the right composition including fertilizer guarantees lasting green leaves and colorful flowers.
Rhododendron Earth - what makes the difference?
For rhododendrons, a soil with a low ph value of 4.5 - 5.0 is ideal. In addition, nutrient delivery at its location must be well organized, as its nutrient requirement as an evergreen shrub is very high.
The water storage capacity of the Rhododendron earth must be high in order to set the roots of any waterlogging. Special rhododendron earth or normal peat? Even at the same pH, they are not only different in price. The advantages of special soil:
Special rhododendron earth is tuned to the needs of popular bog plants such as rhododendron, azaleas, camellias, hydrangeas and heather plants. Mix rhododendron soil yourself - this is how it works
If you do not want to buy rhododendron earth, mix it yourself by making your own compost and mixing it with flowers. Your new rhododendron or offshoot in the garden feels really good in it. Make sure that the pH is not exceeded or fallen below. Dose the fertilizer for the rhododendron soil so that the pH remains around 5.0.
Good to know: Substitutes that are added to peat on free soil bind nitrogen. As a nutrient and moisture buffer, the earth should therefore be mixed with natural clay. By adding sand, heavy garden soils such as loamy soil improve sustainably. Sand with additionally some charcoal or firewood ash avoids numerous fungal diseases.
Tips & Tricks
Humus is one of the most nutritious garden soil. Therefore, fill the site with a humus layer of 20 to 30 centimeters before you use the rhododendron. As an excavation you get humus especially cheap in construction or earthmoving.
Toss excavated humus through a sieve before spreading!
