Is it allowed to water the lawn when the sun is shining?
The sun is laughing from the sky, it is hot and the lawn could certainly tolerate some water: Some gardeners prefer to grab the garden hose at lunchtime to do something supposedly good for the lawn with the cooling water. However, watering the lawn in the sun can have unsightly consequences.
Burning glass effect - nonsense or not?
In general, it is advised not to water garden plants or the lawn in bright sunshine. One reason for this recommendation is the so-called "burning glass" effect, where the countless water droplets on the delicate blades of grass act like burners and cause burns. The result is unsightly brown or yellow spots in the lawn. Do not be confused by claims to the contrary: casting at the wrong time has led to unsightly spots on many other plants in the garden.
The right time for watering the lawn
There is also another reason why you should not water the lawn in the sun: this also heats the ground and also ensures that the irrigation water evaporates faster than it can even infiltrate into the soil and get to the roots. Therefore, you should only reach for the garden hose when the sun is still weak or not (at all) can be seen. The best time is in the early morning hours, preferably before six o'clock in the morning, when the earth is already moistened by dew drops and also cooled down overnight. In exceptional cases, it can also be poured in the evening, but this should be avoided as far as possible: Evening watering ensures a longer phase of moisture during the night, which on the one hand attracts voracious snails and on the other hand is the cause of fungal diseases.

Before watering, you should take a sample to avoid over-watering and thus permanent waterlogging: step on the lawn in several places. Then observe the blades of grass: If these rebuild quickly, there is still enough moisture and no watering necessary.
