Pomelo breed - The guide
You have bought a pomelo and want to grow a plant from the seeds? Go ahead, because this citrus tree is quite easy to grow and maintain compared to its relatives. However, you may not get any pomelo from the seeds. Some of the fruit available under this name in this country are crossbred pomelo and grapefruit, so that when seeds are propagated, everything is possible. However, since the tree needs at least eight, most likely even up to 20 years to the first flowering and fruiting, you do not have to worry about it.
Seed to win
For semen production you just have to go to the nearest supermarket and buy a fresh pomelo there. If possible, buy a rotfleischige fruit, because this contains - in contrast to the brightly colored fruits - usually cores of the correct size. Pomelo pits are about two inches long, quite angular and pale yellow in color. In some fruits, however, only millimeter-sized core approaches are included, which are not suitable for the cultivation of a plant. If you have carried a fruit with seeds home, you eat them as usual and collect the seeds out of it.
How should the seeds be treated before planting?
As with all citrus plants, pomelo seeds germinate untreated and fresh at their best. This means you do not need to peel or dry the kernels, or even keep them in the fridge. Instead, you can simply plant the seed directly from the fruit into the soil. Only the pulp should be carefully removed beforehand.

Now you need patience, because the plant usually takes between four to six weeks to germinate - sometimes even a few months.
Peck and seed the seedling
The young pomelo needs a larger pot as soon as she - apart from the two cotyledons - has developed two to three more leaves. Carefully lift the plantlet out of the growing substrate and place it in a pot of citrus soil. The young plant should first be treated with care (ie only put in the fresh air when it is really warm and sunny outside), but larger pomelos are less sensitive than other citrus plants. Incidentally, pomelos are one of the most vigorous citrus plants - the plant will quickly grow over your head with good care. Therefore you should prune them at least once a year, better twice.
Tips & Tricks
Pomelos grown from seed take a long time to flower first. If you want to go faster, try to get a cuttings and raise them. Also, to refine this or their self-bred seedling on Poncirus trifoliata (the trifoliate orange or bitter lemon) shortens the extremely long youth phase.
