Physalis easily multiply itself

Physalis is a large family of plants of the nightshade family. The Andean berry belongs to this family with its bright orange-red, slightly sour-tasting fruits as well as the domestic, poisonous lantern flower. The plants are very pretty to look at and true beginner plants - they are easy to pull and just as easily multiply.

Physalis multiply via seeds

Physalis seeds are available in every garden center and of course on the internet. However, it is not necessary to buy the seeds every year. Instead, you can even harvest seeds from self-harvested and purchased fruits. All you have to do is cut open a berry and strip the pulp with a knife on a kitchen towel. You should - as butter on a bread - as thin as possible and then let it dry. The seeds collected after a few days can be sowed immediately or kept in a bag until next spring.

Physalis proliferate over cuttings

The propagation of the physalis via cuttings is even easier. The prerequisite for this, however, is that you already own an old plant. In autumn or in the spring, remove some shoots from the leaf axons. They should have a length of about 10 centimeters. The optimal time for the cuttings propagation is at the beginning of the growing season in spring, as the seedlings then easier roots.

Cultivate cuttings

As soon as the first roots have developed (as indicated by the formation of new leaf buds), you can put the plantlet together with the pot into the open air or plant it out. However, potted plants should be transplanted again into a larger pot.

Tips & Tricks

Beware of plant seeds or cuttings of old plants of the neighbors: Usually such plants are passed on again and again and it is rarely known what kind of physalis it actually is. Although the fruits look quite similar, not all are edible. For example, the pretty lantern flower is poisonous, but easily confused with the edible and very healthy Andean berries.
