Physalis can be cultivated at one or more years

Physalis, a herbaceous and fast-growing plant from the Andes, has been growing in popularity in Germany for several years now. The plant known as Andean berry is relatively easy to grow, and it also pleases the gardener with a rich harvest of up to 300 of their delicious berries - per shrub.

Physalis - one or more years?

If you would like to grow the uncomplicated Andean berry and therefore buy a seed bag, then this is usually "one-year". This information is also often found in the horticultural literature. Ergo it is hardly surprising if most gardeners do not know that it is indeed a perennial plant. Physalis can easily reach the age of eight to ten years old and produce fruit every year - provided you ensure a reasonable winter. The Andean berry, which is used to the subtropical climate, does not tolerate frost.

Advantages of hibernation of Physalis

Physalis should optimally winter at temperatures between 10 and 12 ° C and not too dark winter, also takes the large, bushy plant a lot of space away. In addition, it grows and carries very much fruit within a year with little effort - so why should you put the Physalis in winter quarters? The reason is quite simple: the older plant will start fruiting much earlier next year. If you can harvest at a one-year Physalis always from August at the earliest, but more likely from September, so overwintered old plants often develop from July, the first ripe fruit.

Physalis overwinter properly

When hibernating the plant, proceed as follows:

From about the middle to the end of January, you can water the plant more often and gradually get used to more light. In the field, however, they can only after no night frosts are to be expected. Physalis is essential during the growing season, because it is too dark in the house.

Tips & Tricks

If you have little space, but still want to overwinter your physalis, then you do not need to put the whole plant in the winter quarters. It is sufficient to remove one or more cuttings and to overwinter them.
