Physalis cultivation in Germany

Originally called the Andean berry or Cape Gooseberry called Physalis comes from the subtropical areas of South America. Pull the Andean berry yourself

Usually, the plant is pulled from seeds, which you do not have to buy for expensive money. All you have to do is buy a bowl of Physalis fruits in the supermarket. Cut them up at home and use a knife to cut the pulp on a piece of kitchen paper. There you let it dry, finally the seeds can be collected after a few days and kept in a bag. Seed your own seed from January / latest in March in small seed pots and pull the Physalis on the windowsill.

The Andean berry loves the sun

The resulting seedlings are isolated (ie pikiert) once they have developed next to the two cotyledons two to three other leaves. Now put the young plants in a single pot and pour them regularly. Fertilization, on the other hand, is not yet necessary. The young Physalispflänzchen finally can go outside, as soon as no more night frosts are expected, ergo earliest from mid to late May. Alternatively, a culture in the pot is possible. The Andean berry needs a full sun as possible site, but this should rather be in a windless corner of the garden or the balcony. With regard to the substrate Physalis are quite undemanding, they thrive on almost any surface. He just should not be too nutritious.

Cultivate Physalis on balcony or terrace

If you do not have a garden or you want to hibernate your physalis, you can cultivate the plant in a sufficiently large pot. This should be at least 10 liters content. However, in contrast to physalis planted in the garden, potted plants must be watered regularly, and fertilizers are occasionally required from the age of about six to eight weeks. Physalis should not be kept in the house during the growing season, as it is too dark there - even if the room seems to be flooded with light.

Tips

Considering the fact that the Physalis needs about four months from the germination to the harvest of the first ripe fruits, it makes sense to overwinter the plant and to accelerate the fruit ripening process. Then you can reap in July instead of September.
