Peach Benedicte - the sweet Frenchman

Many, just yellow-fleshed, peach varieties are prone to the rippling disease that endangers tree and yield. However, the risk of infestation can be reduced if insensitive varieties are planted. The sweet Frenchman, Peach Benedicte, is one of them.

Benedicte bears big, sweet fruits

Originally, peach Benedicte comes from France, more precisely from the Bouches-du-Rhône region. The department is located in the southeast of France, near the cities of Marseille and Arles. Benedicte develops very large, white-fleshed fruits with the typical red peach skin. The pulp is very easy to detach from the stone. This variety is one of the late-ripening, the peaches are ripe for consumption between late August and mid-September.

Growth-friendly and robust

Benedicte grows very fast and grows up to four meters, whereby the crown develops comparatively expansive. Therefore, care should be taken during planting to ensure a sufficient distance to other plantations, buildings and neighboring properties. This variety is considered to be robust, especially against the widespread in peaches ripples disease. The peach tree is also suitable for a tougher climate as it is frost resistant. However, the flowers are very sensitive to late frosts. Benedicte flowers between March and April with white to pale pink flowers. The variety is self-fertile.

Plant and care for the peach Benedicte

This peach variety requires a location protected from moisture, rain and cold, optimally is a (covered) garden corner, if space permits. With regard to the soil, Benedicte is quite undemanding, a loose and humus rich garden soil is sufficient. If your garden contains rather heavy substrate, you can mix the excavation with peat and commercial humus soil and use this mixture as potting soil. In this case, the planting hole should be about twice as wide and as deep - but do not plant the tree too deep.

This variety is ideal for fresh consumption, but also great for the Einkochen or for various desserts such as peach Cardinal - also a wonderful sweet treat from France.

Tips & Tricks

Although Benedicte is like all peaches self-fertile, but a second peach tree improves the fruit yield significantly. However, you would need a correspondingly large garden for two trees of this variety.
