Chanterelles - edible and inedible species
Real chanterelles are also called egg sponges and are one of the most popular edible mushrooms in Central Europe. The similar looking Falsche Pfifferling (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) is also called orange-yellow Gabelblättling and should not be eaten.
The distinction of the different types
Although the real egg sponges or chanterelles also have lamellae on the top of the hat, the hat edge is not as pronouncedly over-arched as that of the false chanterelle. Beginners should definitely be helped by a connoisseur in the clear determination, as the consumption of Falsch Pfifferlings can cause stomach discomfort.
