Plant peppermint in the right place

Site selection and soil conditions play a very important role in the care of peppermint. The place may be neither too dark nor too sunny, as the peppermint flavor develops only under optimal conditions. The soil must be loose and nutritious.

The right location

The optimal location for peppermint is that the plant is indeed very bright, direct sunlight is avoided, however.

The essential oils of peppermint form only when the soil is warm but not overheated. Excessive heat, such as occurs in direct sunlight, burns the oil. If the ground is too cool, for example due to a windy location, the oil can develop only insufficiently.

The right soil texture

Peppermint grows on almost all soils as long as they provide enough nutrients and are not too moist. A leached site should be improved before sowing or planting with compost. Otherwise, you should occasionally add some organic fertilizer.

Waterloggedness does not tolerate peppermint at all. The soil must therefore be permeable to water. Solid loamy soil is not recommended for peppermint. Sometimes it helps to loosen up heavy, compacted soil by adding sand.

Location on the balcony

When you pull your peppermint in the pot on the balcony, put the bucket half shady and protected from the wind. Again, you should ensure that the floor is not too hot by direct sunlight.

Tips & Tricks

Peppermint may not be too dense. Keep enough distance to other plants. This allows the air to circulate better and the formation of mildew or pest infestation is significantly reduced.
