Add peppermint - necessary or unnecessary?
Like almost all herbs that are grown in the garden because of their essential oils, you must be very careful when fertilizing the peppermint. Too much or wrong fertilizer prevents enough flavors from forming. Prefer to plant for nutritious soil before planting.
Take care when adding peppermint
Although peppermint needs a nutrient-rich soil, the wrong fertilizer and the wrong time to fertilize affect the quality of the leaves. They form much less flavor and develop an unpleasant aftertaste.
Prepare soil well before sowing
If you provide a good soil preparation before sowing or planting the peppermint, you need not worry about fertilizing.
Loosen the soil well. Very firm soil mix some sand so that it becomes lighter and no waterlogging occurs. Work in mature compost or mature manure. Thus, the plant is sufficiently supplied for several years.
In autumn, you can put a light mulch or fir branches over the plant for winter protection and thus additionally increase the nutrient supply.

In the case of leached soils, a slight application of fertilizer makes sense in the spring. Spread some ripe compost around the plant and place it under a rake.
A re-fertilization with stinging nettle can be done during the early summer and after flowering.
Under no circumstances should you use peppermint before winter. This makes the plant vulnerable to diseases of the root system. In addition, it no longer necessarily survives very low temperatures.
Do not harvest peppermint immediately after fertilizing
When fertilizing, remember that you will not be able to harvest the peppermint immediately afterwards. You should wait at least two weeks to pick the leaves.
