Is the slipper flower poisonous?
Originally, the slipper flower (Calceolaria) from Central and South America, cultivated primarily as a room or balcony plant once a year, grows mainly in the equatorial climate of the Amazon and the Cajamarca. Here you will find most of the approximately 270 different species, but in fact the plant is widespread from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego.

In view of the striking color and shape of their flower, the question naturally arises of the toxicity of the popular houseplant. However, both parents of small children and pet owners can be reassured: The slipper flower is not toxic to humans or animals, at least so far no signs of intoxication have become known.

However, the plant is also not suitable for consumption - it is therefore foreseeable to use flowers in the kitchen, for example. The statements made apply both to the room slipper flower (Calceolaria herbeohybrida) and the garden slipper flower (Calceolaria integrifolia).
