How to overwinter oleanders outside
In the Mediterranean homeland of the oleander the summers are long, hot and dry - and the winters rather mild. Where the oleander grows wild, the temperatures rarely fall in the deep minus range - ice and snow are also a rarity.
Leave oleanders outside only in mild winters
The Oleander has been perfectly adapted to this pleasant Mediterranean climate for a long time, which is why it does not belong outside in our climate with short summers and long, often very cold winters in the cold season. The flowering shrub can survive at temperatures of up to minus five degrees Celsius, but only for a short time. Basically, older oleander are more robust than young plants, especially if you get used to it from colder on even colder temperatures. In addition you can the shrubs - provided that the temperatures are mild and there are no extreme night frosts - in the winter quite outside leave. But take good care of them and make sure that the roots are not damaged. Oleander keeps on drifting, even if it is frozen back above ground - only the roots should not get frosty.
If possible, leave oleander in the pot
Unless you live in a region known to have very severe winters, you can also plant the oleander in the garden. However, we recommend that you keep a sufficiently large plant pot with holes in the soil around the root ball so that you can dig up the plant quickly and, if necessary, when the temperatures drop sharply, and put it into winter quarters. On the other hand, if your oleander remains in the pot, put the container under a roof projection or similar, preferably directly in front of a house wall, place the pot on an insulating base made of styrofoam or wood and pack it carefully with a warming material.
