Sow cloves in the summer
Cloves - no matter what kind it is - are real beginner flowers in terms of their multiplication. Actually you do not have to do anything, except to bring the seeds directly into the open air and then to wait. However, you need a little patience, because the usually two-year-old perennials usually bloom in the following year.
The right time for sowing
Many of the biennial summer flowers, which include the carnations, are typically seeded between June and early September. The young plants bloom only in the second year, what a previous sowing - in the early spring - nothing changes. In a timely sowing the young carnation develops only a leaf rosette, but still no flowers. In contrast, you should refrain from sowing in late autumn, because the plants have no time for their necessary development until the onset of winter.
Sow cloves directly
Sawing cloves is a very easy task: First, thoroughly dig up the piece of garden and, if necessary, work some compost and / or lime, depending on the type and variety. Then the bed is raked smooth and you pull about two centimeters deep furrows. There you place the seeds in regular intervals and then cover them with the soil. Keep the substrate slightly damp. The plantlets will germinate within a short time, so you should already isolate them after a few weeks. Over the winter, the young carnations can safely stay out, as they are frost hardy.
If you already have carnations in the garden, you do not need to do anything about their reproduction. All carnation species sow themselves very reliably and form in this way dense mats.
Use cloves for the balcony
Similar to the garden, the sowing of carnations in the pot works. First fill any planter with a mixture of finely crumbled potting soil, sand and some compost. In there you sow the seeds in about two centimeters depth and keep the substrate slightly damp. These jungles can stay outside during the winter, but - unlike the planted specimens - they need some protection. So place the pot on a polystyrene pad and cover the young carnations with some spruce branches.
Tips
Also, the cuttings propagation works great in many carnation species. In the summer you cut half-ripe cuttings of non-flowering shoots, which can also be planted right on the spot.
