The medlar - poisonous or edible?
Medlars are considered an insider tip among the ornamental plants. A picturesque growth, a rich green foliage and beautiful flowers make this wood. But what about the fruits? Are you edible or poisonous?
Neither inedible nor poisonous
The plum-sized fruits of the medlar (Mespilus germanicus) are non-toxic. They contain no toxic substances and can be eaten without hesitation. But beware: In the immature and hard state, the medlars are unappetizing. They should be harvested at the right time. Then they are delicious and ideally suited for raw consumption and processing.
In contrast to Mespilus germanicus, the fruits of the cotoneaster (Cotoneaster), a popular ornamental to cover the soil, are poisonous. All other plant parts of her are likewise.
Tips & Tricks
Do not confuse Mespilus germanicus with Cotoneaster. Both are called medlars but are extremely different. While the fruits of one plant are edible, the fruits of the other plant are poisonous.
