Depending on the variety and location, the oregano can reach plant heights of between fifteen and sixty centimeters. The small, egg-shaped and slightly hairy leaves are an exquisite culinary spice, which gives food such as pizza or tomato sauce the typical southern note.
A pruning is possible at any time
The oregano is a robust plant that tolerates pruning well. Already from April, when no more night frosts are to be feared, you can cut the herbs. This pruning is regularly needed during the summer months.
These cut branches are ideal as cuttings to propagate the plant. To do this, remove the bottom leaves of the oregano and place the plantlet in a container with potting soil. With appropriate care, a small plant quickly develops into a new plant.
Cut back during flowering
If the oregano opens in midsummer, it tastes its pretty white, pink or purple lip blooms most aromatic, because only then the oils are formed. Now is the right time to harvest the kitchen herb and continue processing.
A final cut takes place in autumn.
After the harvest season in early autumn, cut the oregano back to about a hand's breadth above the ground. Since not all oregano species are winterized, you should give the plant a winter protection from brushwood or fleece.

Tips & Tricks
Oregano likes to overgrow with self-sowing and then fill, for example, the cracks between paving stones or gaps in a holey lawn. If this is undesirable, you should rip the small seedlings in time and cut back the oregano before seeds form.
