The almond tree: From very sensitive to extremely hardy
Every almond tree delights with beautiful flowers in spring. However, hobby gardeners should take a close look at the variety. Not every one is hardy.
Little mimosas come out big
Many still seem to be enchanted by the myth of the almond tree of Mediterranean origin. In fact, almond trees initially had a bit of a struggle in our climatic climes.
In the course of time, however, crystallized some, almost optimal varieties out. These survive without much twitching even the hard German winter. Primarily, these are located in our wine-growing regions. There dominates a more subdued climate. This has a magnificent effect on lush prosperity of sweet almond.
Especially hardy varieties
These varieties were created by an excellent selection. You have carefully survived the particularly harsh winter of 1985/86. Even today, Amanda and Rosella are proving their worth, especially in the cooler regions of Germany. If the hobby gardener provides for an ideal location, nothing stands in the way of the growth of this almonds.
Hardy varieties only from the expert
Ambitious hobby gardeners like to try themselves out. The pulling of a own almond tree motivates again and again to experiments. Under certain conditions, small plants can grow into larger trees even in our latitudes.
However, despite all their hard work, their own saplings will never develop into winter-hardy varieties. The hobby gardener can settle them comfortably in planters. These winter without problems in the winter garden from late autumn to spring. As the almond tree throws off its foliage in autumn, it feels just as comfortable in frost-protected cellars.
Tips & Tricks
When planting small trees from specialist retailers, the first 3 to 4 cold seasons are spent in the conservatory or cellar. After that, the almond can overwinter outdoors without restrictions.
