Depending on the subspecies and the climatic conditions, the maiden eye is one or more years old and after a vigorous pruning grows just above the ground every year to a shrub of about 60 centimeters in height. Some subspecies can also grow significantly upright and reach heights of up to 2 meters with a support. After a few years of existence at one location bushy plants form a particularly large number of flower stalks, on which the perennial flowers of the girl's eye bloom a little time-delayed from July to September.
