The true laurel (Laurus nobilis) is also referred to as a spice laurel due to its versatility as a natural herb and spice. The plant, like the poisonous cherry laurel, can be propagated in various ways.

Different types of propagation and their peculiarities

To increase the spice laurel itself, there are basically the following options:

Use root shoots for propagation

The real laurel often tends strongly to the formation of Wurzelausläufern if it is a correspondingly humuser and loose soil at the site. In autumn, cut sturdy laurel bushes into semi-mature head cuttings and place them in a uniformly moist mixture of soil and sand. These cuttings usually form their own roots in a shady spot after a few months and can then be transplanted to a sunnier spot.

Tips & Tricks

For laurel in the pot, transplanting to a larger pot may be necessary every two to three years. On this occasion, not only the plant substrate can be renewed, but you should also separate Wurzelausläufer and use the branches resulting from the planting cutting for cuttings propagation.
