Plant snapdragons, that's the way to go
The snapdragon has been cultivated in our gardens for hundreds of years. Properly planted, it turns out to be a very grateful and easy-care perennial that also scores with an extremely long flowering time.
The site
Snapdragons need a lot of light to develop numerous flowers. Therefore, give the plant a full sun. Even partial shade is well tolerated. Larger varieties need a sheltered place so that the flower stalks are not broken off by gusts of wind.
The substrate
The snapdragon prefers a lime-free soil and tolerates both nutrient-poor and slightly acidic substrate well. If the topsoil of your garden is not optimal, you can enrich it with rhododendron earth or alternatively compost soil.
Sow in the bed
Feels the snapdragon well, including often even out. From April, you can sow the robust plant directly into the field.
Prefer
The preference in the house has the advantage that the offspring has already reached a certain size when planting and flowers earlier. Starting in February, you can sow the snapdragon in seed tanks. In a bright, about twenty degrees warm place the seeds of the cold germ germinate after one to three weeks.
When is planted
In late April or early May it is said for the snapdragon: get out into the fresh air. For a few days, get used to the changed conditions in the field before putting them in their final position. Any night frosts that still occur do not affect the snapdragon.
How is planted?
Like all perennials, put the snapdragon as deep as the pot was. It looks especially nice when you plant the perennial in small groups of three to six plants.
The heyday
Just a few weeks after setting, the first flowers begin to open. From June to well into October, depending on the temperatures, the snapdragon uses new buds.
Tips
In order for the snapdragon to flower long and richly as desired, the flowers should be regularly cut out.
