Privet is a Flachwurzler
Privet is a Flachwurzler. Nevertheless, it is not so easy to replant the shrub or remove the roots permanently from the garden. What should you know about the Flachwurzler Privet?
Privet, a flat-root
Privet forms over the years a very dense, finely branched root system, which does not reach too deep. As a shallow root, the roots remain relatively close to the surface.
The advantage lies in the fact that the roots do not become so strong that they damage masonry or lift pavement slabs. You can therefore place a privet relatively close to buildings or paths.
Transplanting privet in the garden
Many garden owners assume that a flat root like the privet can be easily transplanted. That's only partially true. Implementing older privet shrubs is a sweaty job. You need to dig generously around the bush to get the roots out of the ground as undamaged as possible.
Younger privet shrubs can be excavated and transplanted relatively easily. Make sure, however, that you do not unduly damage or buckle the root system during excavation and replanting.
At their new location, they grow up again relatively quickly if they are sufficiently watered.
Remove privet roots
Although the privet is a shallow root, removing the roots is a matter of its own. The older the shrub, the denser the root system. With manual work you will hardly get far.
Younger privet plants loosen up well with the grave fork. Dig them out and pull the root system out of the ground as far as possible. Keep in mind that remaining plants can drive out new roots.
For older privet hedges you should borrow a mini excavator and go about it. Do not forget that a large privet shrub brings a very nice weight on the scales. It is easiest if you entrust a garden specialist with this work. The professionals dispose of the shrub with the same.
Tips
Since the roots of the leaflet do not grow too deep into the soil, the shrub can not adequately supply itself with water in very dry weather conditions. Therefore, water - even in winter on frost-free days.
