Lavender can easily be cultivated in Germany
Lavender was until now the characteristic plant of the High Provence. Every year, people travel to the southern French province and admire the lush, purple-flowered fields. In addition, there are larger growing areas in other Mediterranean countries, even in India. It is hard to imagine that commercial cultivation in German winegrowing regions should succeed in a few years.
No commercial cultivation in Germany yet
The climate is gradually changing. It is true that many scoffers deny this; However, statistical analyzes of the weather records have shown that the temperature has increased continuously in recent years - depending on the region up to one or two degrees Celsius. That may not seem like much at first glance, but for Mediterranean plants such as lavender, this means a chance to be at home in Germany. So it is not surprising that there are already the first trial plantings, especially in the Mosel area - after all, the winter hardy true lavender also from German gardens, by sowing itself feral.
Especially true lavender feels good
Of all lavender varieties, the true lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, as it is botanically correct, is the most robust. This type of lavender is hardy and copes very well in many areas of Germany - assuming a suitable location. Lavender needs a very sunny, warm as possible location with sandy, well-drained soil. Nutrient-rich, humus soil, peat soil or loamy soil, on the other hand, are less suitable, but can be processed accordingly, at least in the home garden. The history of lavender shows that this Mediterranean plant has been with us since the Middle Ages - even the abbess and healer Hildegart von Bingen has described the herb.
Hibernating the lavender
Only the true lavender should overwinter outdoors - depending on the region and climate also with a protection from brushwood or antifreeze mats. On the other hand, other types of lavender are sometimes winter-proof, but by no means hardy. In cold weather, under cold conditions, they belong in sheltered rooms or in a (non-heated) greenhouse.
Tips & Tricks
Lavender is also very suitable for a balcony planting. The balcony should be as sunny as possible (south or southwest orientation) and also provide protection against weather-related bad luck.
